On the blog this week, we are so excited to introduce Ratika!
Ratika is a board-certified allergist and also a mom to two daughters. Based in New York, Ratika started her own company, Bebaby, after developing her own moisturizing cream. As studies show, moisturizing babies with quality ingredients may decrease the risk of developing food allergies and eczema. Bebaby is also packed in an eco-friendly packaging, with a portion of all proceeds going towards Every Mother Counts.
We spent some time chatting with Ratika to get to know her story as an allergist, entrepreneur and mama.
1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your little one(s).
I am a board-certified allergist/immunologist and I practice in New York. I have two little girls and they are so fun! I am contemplating a third because I have two sisters and it was amazing to have had this built-in support system all my life. I want to give that to my kids – but pregnancy and babies are hard!
2. Along with being a mom, you are also an allergist and have recently started your own business after developing a moisturizing cream. Can you tell us a little about your company, and what inspired you to start Bebaby?
Thanks for asking! I started Bebaby as I was reading studies that show moisturizing babies with quality ingredients can protect the skin barrier which in turn may prevent the risk of food allergies, eczema, hay fever and asthma – known as the atopic march. Its such a simple step, but no one knows about it! Also, parents generally want the best smelling creams for their child, and they are unknowingly doing harm. I thought creating my own cream with the knowledge that I have, could help parents choose the right skin care products for their babies.
3. As a working mama, juggling home and work life can be difficult. How is it parenting in a pandemic? How do you balance between the two?
It is a little challenging – but worth it! I love being with my kids, so I try to be as productive as I can when I am not with them to get most things done. Sometimes it’s a little less sleep – but I think most doctors are used to that! I also have very supportive family that adore the kids so that definitely helps!
4. Do you experience ‘mom guilt’? What do you like to do to take care of yourself?
Mom guilt is always present. We are all human and we do the best we can with the information we have on hand at that moment. I try to remember that. Kids are very resilient and that helps too.
5. Can you please share with us your (breast)feeding journey?
I breastfed my oldest one for about 6 months – when her teeth came in and she was literally biting my nipple, it was causing more anxiety than joy. That’s when I knew it was time to stop. For my 7-month-old, the journey didn’t last as long. I do still feel guilty about that and I wish I didn’t.
6. If you could go back in time before you had kids and offer yourself advice about motherhood, what would you say?
Enjoy life before motherhood. Focus on you and travel the world. Once you have kids, you are vulnerable in a different way that never goes away.
7. And finally, what is your favourite part of being a mama?
When the kids only want me, its sometimes suffocating (lol) but I always feel grateful and happy. I love that my older one opens up to me and talks to me about her day. I want to hang out with her. My little one is so adorable but not so much talking yet!
We want to thank Ratika for taking the time to share her story with us. Being a mom is not easy and as moms, we need to give ourself grace. As Ratika said, “we are all human and we try and do the best we can with the information we have on hand at that moment”. I think that is an important reminder.
